Elementary schoolers in my area have their own Stanleys (or Stanley knock-offs?) with the little straw cover thing. Graphic novels--especially the Baby-sitters Club, as you pictured--yes!! I have a feeling that our suburb/Zadie's school is not very trendy lol. They pretty much all wear clothes from Target. I'm sure in three months I'll start seeing the Gatorade bottles. ;) She does come home with a lot of horrible Youtube catchphrases that the boys in her class say, ugh.
When Rue was in preschool, I would say 60% of the parents in the class worked at Target — like, they're the people who fly to Tokyo and research trends or spend three days on Abbott Kinney observing what people are wearing. We do not tolerate Target slander here in Minneapolis!!! kidding.
lol no shade to Target! It's our fave place. It's just funny that every kid in school wears the same stuff from there. That's cool about how Target finds their style ideas; I didn't know that!
Trends from my formative years are top-tier nostalgia. Show me early 2000s space buns and a dELiA*s catalog and I'll just wallow in warm feelings all afternoon. Will my kids feel that way about the red, white and blue Prime bottles? Or perhaps the crocks with the little icons shoved into the holes. IDK but I hope so.
That's such a generous way of thinking about it — I think most people's first instinct would be to roll their eyes at the Prime bottles. But you know our parents were just as uncomfortable with Delia's catalogs (even though they were objectively perfect!!)
Having owned a Lululemon belt bag (unique coral, not black, thank you) for over two years, I feel conflicted. Should I be smug that I caught this trend early or ragey that my purse has been reduced to a tween accessory?
I am on board with the Full House fashion!! I wanted my mom to be Lori Laughlin. Related: John Stamos’ memoir was disappointing.
RIP Cortana Mall. Lori Laughlin would have brought me to The Limited Too instead of a department store.
Can confirm this trend list as a fellow (close enough to) Minneapolis mom of both a 2nd grader and two 4th graders. Thank you for your reporting on the Gatorade water bottle trend. We've all heard (and heard and heard) about Stanleys but the Gatorade water bottle movement is REAL.
Our current library stack includes half the BSC/Little Sister graphic novel collection. I am on board with that 90s reboot! Has Rue read Smile or Sisters by Raina Telgemeier? Those are some other favorites.
Oh yes, I forgot about Ghosts! I hadn’t heard of Witches of Brooklyn. Picking up the first one today, thanks! (I believe the library drive thru runs a close race with Target drive up as greatest advent of the 2020s.) I wish I had more graphic novel recs. We did a bunch of My Little Pony ones when she was into that show. We listened to all the Magic Tree House books, so I thought she’d like those graphic novels, but not as much. We’ve read the Heidi Heckelbeck series (not graphic) and listened to the first four Harry Potters, so I think Witches of Brooklyn will be right up her alley.
I will never forget going to that museum exhibition with all the STUFF and you low key freaking out. Now every time I'm at Target or anywhere I'm like good god this shit is all going into a landfill.

Well, we do know now that Lori Loughlin goes above and beyond for her children!! I would pay a lot of money to be transported to Cortana Mall in 1995.
You should be smug. You are a god among tweens.

Why is no one talking about the Gatorade water bottles?!!

Yes! Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier is out on our kitchen table right now. She also likes the Witches of Brooklyn series! What other recs do you have?
Coming back to this months later... We're on the third Witches of Brooklyn and love it! One of our children's librarians introduced me to these "If you like __, then you'll love ___" book lists, and that's been super helpful to find more graphic novels. So far from this list we've enjoyed Twins, Real Friends and Sweet Valley Twins (appreciate that 90s throwback): https://westervillelibrary.bibliocommons.com/list/share/2020551859_westerville_kids/2132958869_baby-sitters_club_volume_1,_kristys_great_idea
