I know this is old news, but when I heard that Katy Perry sang “What a Wonderful World” on board the Blue Origin space flight, my first reaction wasn’t embarrassment on her behalf. It wasn’t anger at the fake feminism. It was “TEEZY GEEN!!!” (I thought those other things later.)
Here are some things I’ve been thinking about when I’m not trying to decipher song requests from a two-year-old:
suggested vintage Lacoste polos as an alt to the boring summer tank/t-shirt situation, which reminded me that two of these (my dad’s!) were buried at the bottom of my t-shirt drawer. Here I am living my chic-est life in the bathroom of my kid’s school:Banana bread is the new pistachio (which was the new lavender) when it comes to specialty drink syrups. I think this started with a viral tiktok from a coffeeshop in Oahu a few months ago?? I’m here to report it has made its way to the midwest. I had a banana bread au lait at Mindy’s Bakery in Chicago (in a park while finishing the VERY CUTE new Annabel Monaghan book), saw another banana bread latte later that week at a beachy coffee stand in Michigan, and at the restaurant Minari in Minneapolis, had a twist on an espresso martini that included banana and miso. Comment on this post in 6-12 months when Starbucks introduces a new banana bread seasonal latte. (Also:
has a banana bread syrup recipe on her cute Substack.)Apparently, bandage dresses are back. This trend will forever be a part of my style history — my wedding dress was a BCBG bandage-ish dress. (I stand by it.)
My summer reading so far makes absolutely no sense. There was James by Percival Everett (my review: wow — but you knew that, it won a Pulitzer) , three contemporary romances read in 48 hours each, the 22 hour-on-audiobook biography of Lorne Michaels (a perfect road trip companion while driving home from Chicago earlier this month), and a suburban millennial mom ennui slow burn that I very much enjoyed (out this fall). My daughter and I got these summer reading challenges from one of our local bookstores and you will not be shocked to find out that this is way more fun to fill out than Goodreads (and Storygraph which I want to love but find even less satisfying to populate than Goodreads!! I’m so sorry!)
”She was the sun. She made everything warm.” I can’t stop thinking about how my friend
described her late mom in her latest Substack. What a beautiful legacy to leave.
Looking chic
Long live banana bread!
